This is all well and good, but what makes me so obsessed with this group? For one, the music is simply unlike anything else roaming around on my iPhone. Take a look at their performance below and you’ll see what I mean. To see them perform is not to merely listen to music, it is more an act of falling into this fictional world in order to learn about these characters, have a few laughs and maybe even learn a thing or two. The group takes on the personas of very old, steam powered automatons. Even if this isn’t your music preference, you owe it to yourself to at least give them a chance.īack in 2008, twin siblings David Michael Bennett and Isabella “Bunny” Bennett got together with some other talented folks including performing artist Samuel Luke and created Steam Powered Giraffe, a musical project which has its roots in Vaudeville acts to Cabaret theater. To many, the band I’m about to talk about is going to seem a bit odd and less than conventional, but stick with me here, because Steam Powered Giraffe is one of the quirkiest little indie bands you’ll ever come across. This week is one that I considered doing last week for the first post, but waited as I wanted to really obsess over their music a bit longer. However, we do encourage folks to post their videos (or jpgs or gifs) on #whatsyourmalfunction via Tumblr or Twitter.Hello and welcome back to Totally Obsessed, a little segment where I talk about the thing that has be going completely gaga during a given week. Your video will not be considered without a signed Video Release Form.īy submitting you understand that while we wish we could showcase all of these- only a select few will be used due to the time restraints. Remember to fill out and sign the form completely! If you need to print, sign, and scan the document- do it! If you are a minor we do need your parents permission. Link to Download The Video Release Form: Attach your signed and completed Video Release Form. Attach the video file to the email (no links!)ģ. Once you’re happy with it, you can send it to us.ġ. Wait a few moments- and then flip it around, take a look down at it and give a big ol’ smile. You can look down at your sign and back up if you wish as Bunny shows. In the video, simply hold up your sign for a few moments with your “malfunction” written on it. However you want to appear- do it (of course…nudity isn’t advised if you want a chance at appearing in the music video). Maybe it’s just beautiful casual you in a t-shirt and jeans. Next, create a short video in a well lit area. (i.e., someone who wrote they’re a nerd might put “really smart.” A furry might put “CEO of Digital Distribution Company, or someone who said they were ocd might put “great cuddler”) It could be almost anything really! It could be a positive spin on the “malfunction” trait or just an unexpected positive aspect of yourself. On the other side of the sign, write something positive about yourself. On one side, write down what people might perceive as your “malfunction.” (i.e., “gay,” “furry,” “androgynous,” “fat,” “nerd,” “obsessive compulsive,” “can taste colors,” etc, etc.) Whatever you choose to write on the sign should be in black ink with thick letters. You have until March 31st 2014 to submit your video to us.Īfter that date we won’t be accepting anymore entries.Ĭreate a sign to hold up for the camera on a piece of 11 x 17 white poster or bristol board paper. Please understand our intent is to paint our subjects in a positive light and to have fun! That said- we can only select a few of these to showcase, so there’s no guarantee your video will appear in the final project.īut, if you do end up creating something- we encourage you to share it on #whatsyourmalfunction via Tumblr or Twitter! The internet is filled with jerks and we want you to be safe. So if you’re willing to participate, please know we will not disclose personal information or names (even if you want us to). Granted, this can be a sensitive area for many folks. That’s the theme here: A positive spin on being “broken.” It’s sort of like the message in our song ‘Wired Wrong’ but putting a more positive spin on that idea. Here’s what we can tell you about our new music video: It deals with diversity and using the robot metaphor “malfunction” to apply to things that society may consider flawed or quirky about someone. We love showcasing all the talented, beautiful people that come to our shows and inhabit our corner of the web. Want to be in our next music video? Well we want you in it! The Steam Powered Giraffe fandom is filled with a diverse amount of people from all walks of life.
